Rules relating connections to cortical structure in primate prefrontal cortex

چکیده
According to the structural model of prefrontal cortex, the pattern of corticocortical connections is intricately linked to cortical architecture (Cereb. Cortex 7 (1997) 635). We further explored this model by using quantitative methods to describe the structure and connections of prefrontal cortices. Multi-parameter analyses distinguished di2erent cortical types, positioning at one extreme medial and orbitofrontal (limbic) cortices, and at the other extreme, lateral (eulaminate) cortices. The structural model accurately predicted the laminar pattern of connections, and the relative distribution of connections within cortical layers, based on cortical type. This model may provide the foundation to predict the nature of corticocortical processing and its disruption in psychiatric and neurologic diseases, where neuropathology a2ects speci4c types of neurons and layers. c © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Claustrum projections to prefrontal cortex in the capuchin monkey (Cebus apella)
We examined the pattern of retrograde tracer distribution in the claustrum following intracortical injections into the frontal pole (area 10), and in dorsal (area 9), and ventral lateral (area 12) regions of the rostral prefrontal cortex in the tufted capuchin monkey (Cebus apella). The resulting pattern of labeled cells was assessed in relation to the three-dimensional geometry of the claustru...

2 a common functional identity is determined by the same type of structure and connections, whatever the mammal examined. … stratiographic analogy, grossly appreciated in Nissl or Weigert preparations, constitutes a valuable data point, but it is not completely decisive or infallible. – Cajal (1988, p 524). متن کاملFronto-striatal connections in the human brain: a probabilistic diffusion tractography study.
Anatomical studies in animals have described multiple striatal circuits and suggested that sub-components of the striatum, although functionally related, project to distinct cortical areas. To date, anatomical investigations in humans have been limited by methodological constraints such that most of our knowledge of fronto-striatal networks relies on nonhuman primate studies. To better identify...
متن کاملFirst evidence of a hyperdirect prefrontal pathway in the primate: precise organization for new insights on subthalamic nucleus functions
The direct connections from the cortex to the subthalamic nucleus (STN), the socalled hyperdirect pathway, is known for the cortical motor areas and plays a top– down executive control on basal ganglia (BG). However, little was known regarding the projections onto the STN from anterior and ventral prefrontal regions involved inmore integrated functions such as decision making or reward related ...
متن کاملEvolution of the cerebellar cortex: The selective expansion of prefrontal-projecting cerebellar lobules
It has been suggested that interconnected brain areas evolve in tandem because evolutionary pressures act on complete functional systems rather than on individual brain areas. The cerebellar cortex has reciprocal connections with both the prefrontal cortex and motor cortex, forming independent loops with each. Specifically, in capuchin monkeys cerebellar cortical lobules Crus I and Crus II conn...
